The village of Victoria, often referred to as Victoria by the Sea, is the most charming and historic village you will visit on Prince Edward Island. It is a picturesque fishing village on the southern shore that is brought to life by the many artisans that call it home.

Immigration lawyer James Bardin Palmer founded Victoria by the Sea in 1819 on the south side of the Prince Edward Island. It quickly developed into an important seaport for the large island, with a considerable volume of trade from Europe, the West Indies and other East Coast ports. The Palmer family recognised the benefits of the warm water and the protected location and set up the town on their estate. By the end of the 19th century, the town was growing, with three quays and numerous shops. A variety of products, including potatoes and eggs, were shipped by schooner from Victoria across the sea at the beginning of the 20th century.

Over the years, the municipality has had many businesses, including a bank, an ice rink, a general store, a fox farm, a blacksmith and a trader of agricultural machinery. The ice rink is home to the popular Victoria Union’s hockey team. With the expansion of the Trans-Canada highway in the 1950’s, Victoria by the Sea was bypassed and left to remain as the quaint seaside village it is today. Today, with a population of under one hundred people, numerous family run businesses employ the local people.

The picturesque coastal village of Victoria-by-the-Sea is ideal for a day trip from Charlottown.
